Design Philosophy

As New Mexicans we are all very aware of the limited resources in this region, in particular water. Having beautiful, usable outdoor spaces and being sensitive to the environment are not in opposition to each other. Gardens designed with water-conservation and low-impact issues in mind have always been a component of my design philosophy, so I often emphasize native and xeric plant material. Many native plants and appropriate xeric plants not only require less water but also get along with less maintenance. They’re adapted to the locale and therefore grow in harmony (rather than struggle) with their environment in regard to soils, weather and seasonal patterns. They also play a special role in the overall health of the ecosystem, benefiting the local wildlife and micro-organism community.

Ironically, water features are a classic design element often associated with hot, arid regions. Water has been celebrated in these regions throughout time because it is such a precious commodity. The sight and sound of water alludes to renewal and cool relaxation. I design simple, elegant water features that recycle water responsibly. I frequently introduce water-less features such as paving techniques, dry streams, faux water sources, flowing elements and compositions that suggest water and/or movement and provide a similar effect.

The importance of a well-designed and implemented irrigation system is critical here in northern New Mexico. As I design an irrigation system I utilize all available resources with professional irrigation suppliers and I strive to maintain close involvement with the contractor during the installation. Drip irrigation is extremely efficient for many applications in our area, but still there are many other equipment components in the overall system that can enhance water usage performance.

Sensitivity to the environment and a sustainability-awareness leads me to advocate the use of indigenous and environmentally-friendly materials whenever possible. I also encourage my clients to consider permaculture and other sustainable techniques such as capturing and recycling water in their landscapes.
